School leavers in west London looking to take a year out can gain new skills while giving back to the community with education charity City Year London.

Young people in their final year of school or college in Hounslow , Ealing , Hammersmith and Fulham, Uxbridge and Harrow , can find out more about the opportunities on their doorstep at a special open house on November 27 from 5.30pm to 7pm.

There are 130 places available throughout London schools for the 11 month volunteer scheme starting from September 2015.

Carmel Magwambasa, recruitment coordinator at City Year London, who volunteered in 2011/12 and became a team leader in 2012/13, said: “At our Open House on November 27th you’ll have the opportunity to hear some inspirational stories from our current volunteers and programme graduates, including why they signed up, the impact they’ve had supporting pupils to succeed and how a 'City Year' has benefited them.

"We’re focusing this event on school and college leavers thinking of taking a year out before going to university or starting work so, if you’ve spotted our red-jacketed volunteers walking around Hounslow and wondered what they’re up to, now’s your chance to find out!”

Currently there are a team of 10 young volunteers serving pupils at Reach Academy in Feltham acting as mentors and role models, as part of a one-year scheme, where they run after school activities, homework clubs and provide one-to-one support.

The main role of recruits is to provide extra support to pupils in and out of the classroom and allow them to attend valuable training, build personal and professional skills as well as help them decide what to do next.

The youth charity is appealing to young people aged 18 to 25 who want to take a 'year out' before going onto further education or employment.

In the past opportunities City Year volunteering has led to jobs within the charity sector, teacher training, as well as going on to degree courses ranging from medicine to business studies and apprenticeships.

The open house will be held at the charity's offices at 58-62 White Lion Street, nearest tube station Angel, from 5.30pm to 7pm on November 27.
